Ingredients

Cake:

  • 1 box strawberry cake mix about 473 grams
  • Eggs vegetable oil, and water (amounts specified on the cake mix box)

Milk Mixture:

  • 1 14-ounce can (397 grams) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 12-ounce can (355 ml) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup 236 ml half-and-half

Topping:

  • 2 cups 473 ml heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup 60 grams powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon 5 ml vanilla extract
  • Crushed freeze-dried strawberries for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • Prepare the strawberry cake mix according to the package instructions, using the required amounts of eggs, vegetable oil, and water.
  • Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and bake for the time specified on the cake mix box, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Remove the cake from the oven and immediately poke holes all over the top of the cake with a chopstick or fork.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, half-and-half, and evaporated milk.
  • Pour the milk mixture over the warm cake and let it cool completely at room temperature.
  • Cover the cake and refrigerate it for at least overnight, or up to 24 hours, to allow the milk to soak into the cake.
  • When you are ready to serve the cake, make the whipped cream. In the bowl of a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract on high speed until stiff peaks form.
  • Spread the whipped cream over the top of the chilled cake and garnish with crushed freeze-dried strawberries, if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute a tub of Cool Whip for the homemade whipped cream, if you prefer.
  • For an extra burst of strawberry flavor, you can substitute strawberry milk for the half-and-half in the milk mixture, or fold fresh chopped strawberries into the cake batter before baking.
  • This cake is best served chilled, but you can serve it the same day if you are short on time.
