Ingredients Equipment Method

Ingredients

  • 1 medium Russet potato Best for baking due to its starchy texture and crisp skin
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil Helps achieve a golden, crispy skin—optional but recommended
  • 1/2 tsp Sea salt Enhances flavor and adds light texture to the skin
  • Optional Black pepper For extra flavor, sprinkle before or after baking
  • Optional Garlic powder Adds a subtle savory depth to the potato skin
  • Optional Fresh herbs (e.g., rosemary, thyme) Can be added for aroma or garnishing

Equipment

  • 1 Oven Preheated to 400°F (200°C) for optimal crispy skin
  • 1 Baking tray or sheet Use a flat, rimmed tray for air circulation and even baking
  • 1 Wire Rack (Optional) Elevates potato for extra crispiness and even cooking
  • 1 Fork or skewer To pierce holes in the potato and check for doneness
  • 1 Basting brush (optional) For brushing olive oil evenly over the potato skin
  • 1 Kitchen Towel To dry the potato thoroughly before baking
  • 1 Oven mitt For safe handling of hot trays and potatoes

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven
Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). This temperature ensures a fluffy interior and crispy skin without the need for foil.
  2. Wash and Dry the Potato
Scrub the potato under running water to remove dirt. Use a clean kitchen towel or paper towel to dry it completely — this is important for crispiness.
  3. Pierce the Potato
Using a fork or skewer, poke the potato 4–5 times around its surface. This allows steam to escape and prevents it from bursting in the oven.
  4. Oil and Season (Optional but recommended)
Brush the potato with olive oil to give the skin a beautiful golden crunch. Then sprinkle sea salt all over. You can also add black pepper, garlic powder, or herbs for extra flavor
  5. Place on Baking Tray or Wire Rack
Put the potato directly on a baking tray (or a wire rack on a tray if available). Avoid using foil — the dry heat is what makes the skin perfectly crispy.
  6. Bake the Potato
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the size. Halfway through, you can flip it once for even crisping (optional). It’s ready when a fork slides in effortlessly.
  7. Let It Rest Briefly
Remove from the oven using oven mitts and let it rest for 5 minutes. This allows the steam inside to finish softening the interior.
  8. Serve and Enjoy
Slice it open, fluff the inside with a fork, and add your favorite toppings like butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, or just a pinch more salt. Enjoy your comforting, crispy-skinned baked potato!
