Ingredients

  • 3 large cooking apples about 600g, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 100 g unsalted butter plus extra for greasing
  • 75 g caster sugar
  • 6 slices of white bread about 200g, crusts removed
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

  • Peel, core, and slice 3 large cooking apples, totaling about 600g.
  • Place the sliced apples in a bowl and toss them with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to prevent browning. Set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Buttered Bread

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 1.5-liter ovenproof dish with butter.
  • Melt 100g of unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat.
  • Brush one side of each of the 6 slices of white bread (about 200g), removing the crusts beforehand, with melted butter.
  • Sprinkle the buttered slices with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg.

Step 3: Assemble the Pudding

  • Arrange half of the buttered bread slices in the bottom of the prepared dish, buttered side up.
  • Layer half of the prepared apple slices on top of the bread.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining buttered bread slices and apple slices.
  • Pour any remaining melted butter over the top of the assembled pudding.

Step 4: Bake the Pudding

  • Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes or until the apples are tender and the top is golden brown.
  • Remove the pudding from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve the apple charlotte pudding warm, optionally with custard or whipped cream, and enjoy its delicious flavors!
