- 3 large cooking apples about 600g, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 100 g unsalted butter plus extra for greasing
- 75 g caster sugar
- 6 slices of white bread about 200g, crusts removed
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
Step 1: Prepare the Apples
Peel, core, and slice 3 large cooking apples, totaling about 600g.
Place the sliced apples in a bowl and toss them with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to prevent browning. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Buttered Bread
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 1.5-liter ovenproof dish with butter.
Melt 100g of unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat.
Brush one side of each of the 6 slices of white bread (about 200g), removing the crusts beforehand, with melted butter.
Sprinkle the buttered slices with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
Step 3: Assemble the Pudding
Arrange half of the buttered bread slices in the bottom of the prepared dish, buttered side up.
Layer half of the prepared apple slices on top of the bread.
Repeat the layers with the remaining buttered bread slices and apple slices.
Pour any remaining melted butter over the top of the assembled pudding.
Step 4: Bake the Pudding
Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes or until the apples are tender and the top is golden brown.
Remove the pudding from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving.
