Wet Ingredients:
- ⅔ cup 158 ml milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon 5 ml vanilla extract (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon 1.25 ml ground cinnamon (optional)
- Salt to taste pinch
Dry Ingredients:
- 6 thick slices of bread about 1 inch thick
- 1 tablespoon 15 ml unsalted butter, or more as needed
Combine wet ingredients: Gather all your ingredients. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon (if using), and salt.
Prepare the bread: Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt a tablespoon of butter in the pan.
Soak the bread: Dunk each slice of bread in the egg mixture, coating both sides evenly. Don't let the bread soak for too long, or it will become mushy.
Cook the French toast: Transfer the soaked bread to the hot griddle or skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown.
Serve immediately: Serve the French toast hot with your favorite toppings, such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
- You can use any type of bread you like for French toast, but thick slices like brioche, sourdough, French bread, or challah work best.
- If you don't have vanilla extract or cinnamon, you can leave them out.
- To make sure your French toast cooks evenly, preheat your griddle or skillet before adding the butter and bread.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the French toast. Cook in batches if necessary.
- If you find that the French toast is browning too quickly, reduce the heat slightly.
- Keep cooked French toast warm in a preheated oven (200°F) while you cook the remaining slices.
